I was reading through an old issue of Byte magazine from 1980 that my uncle left me, and it had a feature on the IBM 3340. That thing weighed like 200 pounds and stored less data than a single photo on my phone. It really put into perspective how far we've come, even if my 2007 laptop sounds like a jet engine now. Has anyone else stumbled on a stat like that that just blew your mind?

TIL my old ThinkPad runs better with Linux than Windows ever did

I had this old ThinkPad T420 sitting in my closet for years. It just got slower and slower after every Windows update until I could barely open a browser without waiting 2 minutes. Last Tuesday I finally gave up and installed Ubuntu on it, mostly because I was bored and had nothing else to do that afternoon. The whole process took about an hour and I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because everything was so smooth. Now I can actually use the thing for browsing and writing without it freezing up on me every 5 minutes. It even wakes from sleep in like 3 seconds which is insane compared to before. Has anyone else tried switching an old laptop over and been shocked at how much life it gets back?

Got a 2004 ThinkPad running and I think everyone is wrong about Windows 10 on old machines

I see people saying you gotta stick with XP or Linux on these old laptops, but I put Windows 10 on my T42 with a 1.8GHz Pentium M and 2GB RAM after removing the bloatware and it boots in under 2 minutes. It stutters on videos but for basic email and writing it works fine, which makes me think we give up too easy on these older OS upgrades. Has anyone else tried pushing a vintage laptop with a modern OS past what the forums say is possible?

Tbh I thought I was done for. I was parked at a Love's in Flagstaff, Arizona trying to pull up some old pictures from 2010 on my old Dell Inspiron 1525. It froze, made a clicking noise, and then gave me a black screen with a blinking cursor. I freaked out because that thing has like 8,000 photos from before I even had a smartphone. I let it sit for an hour unplugged, prayed a little, and then held down the F8 key during startup and chose 'last known good configuration'. It actually booted up slow but everything came back. Has anyone else had that old Dell trick work when the hard drive sounds like it's dying? I'm thinking I need to back this up now before it really goes out.

Has anyone else had a cheap paste fail on them like this or did I just get a bad batch?

I keep my 2012 HP desktop running for basic word processing and email, and last month Windows forced a feature update that turned it into a slow, stuttering mess. After 3 attempts to roll it back, I finally installed Linux Mint instead, and now the thing runs faster than it ever did with Windows 7. I've been trying to keep my old Dell Latitude from 2008 alive for basic browsing. I tried Zorin OS Lite first and it was okay but kinda sluggish opening apps. Then I threw Lubuntu on there and wow, it boots in like 30 seconds now. The difference is night and day for lightweight tasks. Has anyone else had better luck with one distro over another for really old hardware?
