The repair guy at the flea market in Allentown said my soldering was the problem, not the caps
I've been recapping a dead 1998 ThinkPad for about 3 weeks now, and I kept blaming the electrolytics because that's what every forum says to do first. A guy with a folding table full of old boards at the Allentown flea market watched me work for a bit and said flat out "your joints look like popcorn, that's your real issue." I was using a $12 iron with no temp control and too thick a tip, so I bumped up to a station I borrowed from a friend and switched to a fine chisel tip, and suddenly the thing actually booted. Now I'm wondering how many boards I wrote off as dead when it was just my heat. What temp do you all run for through-hole work on these old machines?
