Subbed a show for 3 episodes before I realized it was a sequel I hadn't watched

Picked up this new mecha anime on Crunchyroll last week and was so lost by episode 3. Turns out it's the third season of a series I never touched. Learned to actually read the synopsis first from now on. Anyone else ever jump into a show blind and get completely confused?

I actually prefer subbed over dubbed for Ghibli movies now

Tbh I used to be all about the Disney dubs on my VHS copies of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke back in 2003. But after I watched the sub of Howl's Moving Castle around 2016, I realized the original voice actors just hit different. The emotion in the Japanese performances feels way more real to me, even if I have to read subtitles the whole time. Anyone else swap sides on this debate after giving subs a real shot?

A buddy of mine told me he skips filler arcs entirely and just reads the wiki summaries

He said he saved like 80 hours on One Piece alone and honestly it made me think about how much time I spend watching episodes that don't really matter to the main story. Do you guys skip filler or power through it for completion?

Inside a conventions manga room and it hit me how most of us skip the translators notes

I was at a small con in Denver this weekend looking through their manga section. Noticed how many people flip past the first couple pages where they explain the honorifics and cultural stuff. Does anyone actually read those or are we all just pretending to know what -chan means?

My coworker told me to skip episode 4 of a 2015 anime and I regret it

Last week my buddy Mark swore I should jump from episode 3 to episode 5 of Aldnoah Zero because he said the middle ep was just filler. I listened and ended up totally lost on why the main characters were fighting in episode 6. Turns out episode 4 had a key betrayal scene that explained everything. Has anyone else trusted a friend's skip advice and ended up confused?

Used to skip the filler episodes, now I watch them all

Back in 2019 I was on a One Piece binge and skipped every filler arc. Thought they were pointless and wasted my time. Then I hit the G-8 arc by accident last year. It had so much character banter and world building I missed. Now I watch every filler for shows I care about. Anyone else find a filler arc that actually added to the story for them?

Had a chat with my nephew about Naruto last weekend and it made me rethink the whole series

He brought up how Sasuke's redemption arc actually mirrors a lot of real life toxic friendships and now I cant watch those old episodes the same way anybody else get blindsided by a kids take like that?

Hot take: dubbing used to be fine but now I can't stand watching it

I used to watch everything dubbed back in 2018, especially shonen like My Hero Academia. Then I caught a clip of the subbed version of Attack on Titan season 3 part 2 last year and the raw emotion from the Japanese voice actors just hit different. Now when I try dubbed stuff the lip flaps being off drives me crazy and the English voices feel flat. Am I the only one who flipped like this after years of being fine with dubs?

Sub vs dub for Cowboy Bebop is not even close

I finally got around to rewatching Cowboy Bebop last month after about 10 years. First time I watched it dubbed because that was all Netflix had at the time. This time I tried the sub and honestly the difference is night and day. The Japanese voice actors bring way more grit and emotion to Spike and Jet. The English cast is fine but the pacing and delivery in the sub just hits different for certain scenes. Has anyone else gone back and swapped languages on an old favorite?

Turns out those mission-based side stories actually had some decent character moments I completely missed as a kid. Has anyone else changed their mind about filler after a rewatch?

Blew a fuse at 3am during a Ghibli marathon

Was watching Spirited Away on my old laptop, power strip got overloaded. All three monitors went black. Lights off. Total silence. Had to dig out the fuse box in my underwear with a phone flashlight. Took 45 minutes to find the right switch. Has anyone else killed their power setup during a late night anime session?

Tried watching a mecha anime while keeping track of every pilot's name and mech model on a spreadsheet

After 12 episodes of Gundam I had 83 rows of data and realized I spent more time updating the spreadsheet than actually watching the show, so has anyone else turned a chill hobby into a full-time job by accident?

Y'all keep calling every shonen a 'battle anime' and it's driving me nuts

I was in a thread about Fruits Basket last night and someone called it a battle anime because Tohru fights her emotions. That's not what the term means. The battle genre is for stuff like Dragon Ball or One Piece where physical fights drive the story, not internal conflicts. Has anyone else noticed people throwing around genre labels wrong or am I just being too picky?

Used to skip filler arcs in every anime until a friend showed me how Gintama handles them

For years I was that person who would look up filler lists and skip every non-canon episode. I thought they were just padding and a waste of time. Then last month my buddy made me watch the Gintama episode where they literally have a meeting about being a filler episode. It was so meta and self aware that it totally changed how I see filler now. Some of those episodes are actually better than the main plot. Anyone else had a show flip your opinion on something you used to hate?

That beloved anime streaming service I trusted crashed during a crucial weekend marathon

I had planned a whole Saturday last month to finally watch the new season of Mob Psycho 100 with my nephew, but the Crunchyroll app on my TV just kept freezing every 10 minutes. After restarting the router twice and trying a different device, I still missed half the episodes and we gave up by dinner. Has anyone else found a way to get these services to actually work reliably on a Roku?

The opening episode of My Hero Academia season 3 looked way sharper than season 6 and I think I know why

I went back to rewatch the Stain fight from season 2 and compared it to the final arc in season 6 and the difference in animation quality is crazy. Studios start strong with better budgets and key animators but by the end of a long run they burn everyone out and rush the action. Has anybody else noticed a specific season where the quality just dropped off hard?

The whole time I was watching dubbed anime, I thought I was saving time

I realized last month that I was actually missing out on a ton of emotional impact by not watching subbed. It hit me during a quiet scene in a show called 'March Comes in Like a Lion' where the main character's voice just cracked in a way the English dub totally flattened out. I always figured reading subtitles would slow me down, you know, like multitasking while folding laundry or something. But I timed it out on three episodes once and the runtime difference was maybe 30 seconds total, not enough to matter. Now I'm wondering if I've been cheating myself out of better performances for like 5 years of anime watching. Has anyone else had that moment where they switched and never looked back, or do you still swear by dubs for certain genres?

I used to love subbed anime exclusively but now I'm all about dubs

Back in 2016 I was that person who'd argue subs are the only way to watch anime. But after binging Code Geass last month with the English dub, I realized I was missing out on so much by not paying attention to animation. The voice acting in some dubs has gotten way better, especially for shows like Death Note where the English cast nails it. Anyone else flip from subs to dubs as they got older or am I the only one who changed their stance?

Took a poll from the anime club at lunch about favorite arcs

I overheard a couple of kids talking about which arc from One Piece they'd skip if they had to and it got me thinking. They were really passionate about Enies Lobby vs Water 7 and I just stood there listening for a good ten minutes. It made me realize I've been watching anime for years but never really broke down a show arc by arc like that. I went home that night and tried it with Attack on Titan, writing down my top 3 arcs and why each one worked or didn't. It actually changed how I pay attention to pacing and character development now. Has anyone else done that kind of deep dive on a series and come out seeing it different?

Burned $80 on a limited edition blu-ray box set

I pre-ordered that special edition release of Cowboy Bebop from a smaller distributor and the discs had skipping issues on episode 5. They wouldn't refund me because I opened it. Anyone else get burned by these overpriced anime box sets?

Just found out the original Dragon Ball had a 2-year gap in the dub

I was digging through old forum archives last night looking for rumors about the Buu saga. Then I stumbled on a post from 2003 that mentioned Funimation didn't license the first 13 episodes until like 1995. But here's the thing - there was almost a 2 year gap between when they dubbed those and when they picked up the rest. I had no idea the early Z dub was so rushed because they were playing catch up. Has anyone else found weird gaps like this in other classic series?

PSA: I picked the cheaper voice actor over the big name dub and regret it

I was deciding between two dubs for a new anime I started last month. One had a big name voice actress I recognized from a popular series, the other was a lesser known person but cost less on the streaming service. I thought, how bad could it be? So I went with the cheaper option to save a few bucks. Man, was that a mistake. The voice acting felt flat, like she was just reading lines off a page. No emotion during the big fight scene in episode 3, totally ruined it for me. I ended up switching to the other dub halfway through and it was way better. Has anyone else tried to save money on something like this and gotten burned?

Rewatching Naruto after 10 years felt like a different show...

I binged the Chunin Exams back when I was 16 and thought it was just cool fight scenes. Now I'm 26 and watching Rock Lee vs Gaara hit me completely different... I actually teared up at the flashback of Lee training. The whole theme of hard work vs talent lands way harder when you've been in the workforce grinding for a decade. Has anyone else gone back to an old favorite and seen a whole new layer they missed before?
