A job in a damp Seattle basement three years ago made me swear off shellac forever. A client's antique dresser last month proved me wrong.

That "damp Seattle basement" is the worst. I keep a cheap dehumidifier running in my work area now, total game changer for shellac.

That damp basement struggle is real. How often do you have to empty that dehumidifier?

My uncle's old house in Portland had that same basement dampness. He tried to French polish a table down there and the finish turned cloudy in two days. I told him to move the piece upstairs near a window, but he was stubborn. The whole project ended up with a weird, sticky texture that never fully cured. Some environments just fight against certain materials no matter what you do.
