TIL my friend thinks it's fine to keep a lost wallet if you can't find the owner

My neighbor found a wallet on the sidewalk in front of our building in St. Louis last week. It had about $40 cash and a couple of credit cards. He said since there was no ID, he was just going to keep the money and toss the rest. I told him we should at least try to call the bank on the cards, but he thinks that's too much work for a stranger. I feel like you have to try, even if it's inconvenient. Has anyone else had a friend take the easy way out with found stuff?

Honestly, that's free money, why stress?

I get what you mean about free money, but it's never that simple, is it? The stress comes from all the weird rules and the feeling they could take it back any second. My brain just won't let me relax even when something good happens, lol. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But is it really that serious @the_amy or is your brain just overthinking a good thing?
