The "pay it forward" line at Starbucks really messed with my head yesterday

I was in line at a Starbucks in Austin and the barista said the person ahead of me paid for my drink, so I felt pressured to do the same for the person behind me even though I'm tight on cash this week. Now I'm out $6.50 extra and wondering if that chain just makes people spend more money than they planned. Is it wrong to just say thanks and walk away without keeping it going?

That's the only way to survive this stuff honestly. Next time just give em a blank stare, @richard_hall, and walk away like you're late for something important.
