My neighbor's kid mowed my lawn last week and I'm not sure what's fair to pay him.
He's 14 and just started doing yards on our street in Cedar Rapids. He did a solid job on my quarter acre, took him about 90 minutes. I gave him $40, which felt right, but then his mom texted thanking me for the 'generous tip' and now I'm second-guessing if that was his normal rate or if I overpaid and set a weird expectation. What do you usually pay a teenager for yard work these days?

My kid just started doing lawns last summer. $40 for a quarter acre is spot on for a 14 year old. He probably charged $30-$35 as his base rate, so the extra $5-$10 looks like a tip to his mom. Just ask him next time what he charges, I do that with our neighborhood kids. Keeps it simple and avoids the weirdness with the parents.
