My cousin told me to just lie on my resume for a warehouse job
Back in March, my cousin Mike told me that the warehouse he worked at never checks references or verifies past jobs. He said I should just pad my resume with a fake forklift certification to get hired faster. I was desperate for cash after my car broke down, so I almost went for it. But I ended up being honest and listing only my real experience stocking shelves at a grocery store for 2 years. The manager actually called my old boss and hired me anyway, but they put me on a 90 day probation because of my limited skills. My cousin got fired last month when his fake cert got caught during a safety audit. Has anyone else had a family member give them bad career advice like this?

Did the manager actually tell you it was the 90 day probation because of your limited skills or did you just assume that? Because 90 day probation periods are standard at a lot of warehouses regardless of experience. Thats how they weed out people who dont show up or cant handle the pace. Your cousin got caught because he lied about something concrete like a certification that has a paper trail. But honestly a lot of people stretch the truth on soft skills and never face consequences for it. The real bad advice wasnt telling you to lie, it was telling you to lie about something that can actually be verified.

Well I've been in similar shoes before and what worked for me was being upfront about what I could and couldn't do. I told the hiring manager straight up that I had experience with the basics but would need some training on their specific system. They appreciated the honesty and gave me a shot anyway, plus they knew what to expect from day one.

Lying on a resume is never worth it. Your cousin learned that the hard way. Good thing you went with the truth.
