Can we talk about the ethics of returning a used item as 'new'?

I used to think returning a slightly used tool was fine if it looked okay, like a cordless drill I ran for about an hour. I'd just clean it and put it back in the box. Last month, I bought a new orbital sander from a big box store and the motor sounded rough right out of the package. It was clearly a return someone else had used on a job. That changed my view. Now I only return something if it's truly unused or broken, because the next person shouldn't get my leftovers. Has anyone else had a moment that made them rethink a common return habit?

That's a solid point and it's everywhere now. We've all been on the receiving end like you and @aarons36 with his friend's saw. It's the same mindset that makes people treat public spaces like trash, thinking someone else will deal with it. Returning used junk as new just passes the problem to the next person who paid full price.

Totally feel you on this one. It's insane how people just shrug and pass their problems off to the next guy like it's no big deal. The whole "someone else's problem" attitude is just lazy and selfish, and it ruins things for everyone else.

Did a friend get a "new" saw with sawdust still in the box?
