Vent: Saw a 6.7 Powerstroke with a homemade EGR delete at a truck stop near Boise
Stopped for fuel at the Flying J off I-84 and spotted a 2015 F-250 with the hood up. The owner was showing off his work to another guy. He'd bypassed the EGR cooler with a piece of heater hose and two hose clamps, just looped it right there in the engine bay. I didn't say anything, but that's a fire hazard waiting to happen, not to mention the codes it must be throwing. Has anyone else run into this kind of backyard fix on the road, and what did you say?

What happens when that heater hose gets soft from engine heat and pops off? You'd have a massive coolant leak right onto hot exhaust parts, which is way worse than just a check engine light. I saw a guy's coolant hose fail on an old 7.3 and it basically steamed cleaned his engine bay before he could shut it off.

Yeah that's a scary picture you're painting. Seen a few heater hose failures myself and they're usually more of a slow weep than a sudden pop. The real danger is ignoring the check engine light that could point to an overheat condition brewing. By the time a hose gets that soft, you've probably had a cooling system problem for a while that you missed.
