Shoutout to the old timers who taught me to feel for a worn injector cup by hand before we had borescopes

Last week, a new apprentice at our shop in Boise pulled out a $5,000 scope for a simple check I could have done with my fingers, and it made me miss the three years I spent learning from a guy named Carl in a dusty bay in Cheyenne where the only 'scan tool' was a piece of chalk and your ear.

And that apprentice probably spent more time figuring out the scope's menu than the actual job would have taken. I swear, some of these kids think diagnostics is just plugging things in until a light turns green. Carl would have just handed you the chalk and told you to listen for the change in the diesel knock. You learned the feel of a problem back then, you didn't just read it off a screen.

But @the_blair, maybe the scope just helps them learn faster now.
