I finally changed how I torque heads after a shop owner ripped me apart

Guy told me I was using the torque wrench wrong on Cummins ISX heads, said I need to go slow and steady not just crank till it clicks. Been doing it his way for 6 months now, anyone else had to unlearn bad habits from old shops?

Man I used to laugh at old timers who said to go slow on ISX heads. I figured click is click right? Then I got chewed out by a fleet manager who showed me the torque angle difference on a digital wrench. Going slow lets the bolts actually stretch properly. Saved me from having to redo a whole head gasket job that woulda cost me two days. Now I take like 45 seconds on each pass instead of 15.

I get what you're saying @nancy275, but I've been running ISX heads for years with fast impacts and never had a come back or a blown gasket. You can set the angle with a digital wrench just fine if you know what you're doing, slow or fast. I think most of the "stretch time" stuff is just old habits that get passed down.
