Heard a guy at the parts counter say he never checks his coolant filter housing for air leaks

I was grabbing a water pump gasket in Bakersfield last Thursday and overheard this. He was convinced his overheating issue was a bad thermostat, but he hadn't even looked at the filter housing o-ring. I went back to the shop and checked one on a Duramax we had in. Sure enough, the seal was cracked and letting air in. It's a five minute check that can save a ton of diagnostic headache. How often do you guys actually pull and inspect those seals during a service?
