Update: the guy who ran my first data center tour in Dallas told me to stop worrying about cable labels
I walked into a colo in Dallas on a Tuesday and asked about their color coded patching setup. He pointed at a rack and said the labels peel off in a hot aisle within 18 months anyway, so he just uses different length patch cables and keeps a printed map taped inside the door. I still think structured labeling matters, but I've stopped buying $40 label makers for every new rack. Curious if anyone here has run length based patching for more than 3 years without it turning into a spaghetti mess.
