I used to think managed switches were overkill for a small office

Ran a 10-person dental practice network off dumb switches for years (you know, just plug and pray). Then last month a rogue device flooded the whole LAN during patient check-ins and I spent 4 hours on a Saturday tracing cables. Picked up a used Cisco SG300 off Facebook Marketplace in Phoenix for $60 and set up VLANs for the front desk and X-ray machines separately. Has anyone else hit that wall where a cheap setup finally costs you more time than it saves?

A single flood event in FOUR YEARS does not justify buying managed switches and overhauling your network. You could have just unplugged the rogue device and moved on with your life. Most small offices can run for YEARS on dumb switches with zero problems unless you are buying the cheapest no-name hardware from AliExpress.

My neighbor's cat unplugged our whole office once by chewing through a power strip.
