A vendor at a Phoenix trade show told me most switch ports sit unused their whole life
I was at a Cisco partner event in Phoenix back in March and a guy from a reseller told me they pulled usage logs from 40 customer switches. About 60 percent of the ports never carried a single packet in three years. I always assumed we were short on ports and buying more gear every year. Now I am looking at our own closet and wondering how much of it is just decoration. Anyone else ever run port utilization numbers on their own stack?
My buddy ran that exact check on his company's stack last fall and found something like 70 percent of ports dark after five years, which blew his mind since they'd been asking for budget to add more. He said the kicker was half the used ones were just uplinks and a few printers. Your mileage may vary by site of course, but it at least made him feel less crazy for pushing back on new gear.
