Tried brewing with a moka pot on a camp stove and got something closer to mud than coffee
Took a moka pot out to a campsite near Bend, Oregon a couple weeks ago thinking I'd get that nice rich cup I make at home on the kitchen stove. The camp stove burner is way smaller and the flame sits off to one side, so the water heated super uneven. Instead of a steady push of coffee up through the grounds, it just sat there sputtering for maybe four minutes before any liquid came out. What finally came up was dark and thick enough that my friend said it looked like pancake syrup, and honestly it tasted bitter and burnt at the same time. I think the issue is I had the grind too fine for that setup and no way to control the heat low enough to slow things down. Next time I'm bringing pre-ground coffee that's a bit coarser and keeping the lid open so I can watch when it starts to flow. Has anyone else had a moka pot go sideways on a camping stove, and did you fix it by changing the grind or just bringing a different brewer entirely?
