Tried a $15 hand grinder from Amazon and got coffee sludge instead of grounds

Honestly, I figured a cheap hand grinder could get the job done for my morning pour-over. But the burrs were so inconsistent I got a mix of dust and chunks that looked like dirt from a job site. I learned you really can't cheap out on the grinder if you want actual flavor, not mud. Anyone else burn cash on a bad grinder before upgrading?

Not everyone needs a fancy grinder to make good coffee though... a buddy of mine uses a $10 blade grinder from a gas station and his pour-overs taste just fine to me. Maybe the issue isn't the price tag but how you're actually using it, like holding it steady or not overheating the beans. Plenty of people get decent results from cheap gear if they adjust their technique instead of blaming the tool.

That job site dirt comparison is painfully accurate. What pour-over brewer were you using when you got those results?
