Pro tip: just found out my 'fresh roasted' bag from the grocery store was 6 months old
So I was at the Whole Foods on Lamar in Austin last week and grabbed a bag of beans off the shelf, you know the ones in those fancy looking bags with the roast date stamped on them. I flipped it over and the date said it was roasted in March. It was September. Six months sitting on a shelf. I always assumed if a store bothered to print a roast date, the stuff had to be at least somewhat recent, but apparently not at all. Back when I started getting into coffee like 8 years ago, I was just buying whatever was on sale and never even looked at dates. Now I feel dumb for all those years of wondering why my french press always tasted flat and kind of papery. I checked three other bags on that same shelf and every single one was at least 4 months old. Does anyone here actually trust grocery store beans anymore, or is it all online orders and local roasters for you?
Six months is rough but honestly most people wouldn't even taste the difference in a latte drowned in milk and syrup. Sounds like this is more about your palate getting pickier than the beans being a scam.
