Overheard a barista roasting her own beans at home and now I'm curious

I was waiting for my latte at a shop in Portland last week and this barista told a customer she roasts green beans in a cast iron pan on her stovetop because it's way cheaper than buying fresh roasts. She said she saves about $8 a pound doing it herself and gets the flavor exactly how she likes it. Has anyone here tried pan roasting or am I better off getting a dedicated machine?

My buddy tried pan roasting once and set off every smoke alarm in his apartment building, took three days to air out the smell.

Lmao "took three days to air out the smell" sounds about right. I've done that before where I thought I had the fan on high enough and next thing you know the whole house smells like burnt oil for a week straight.
