My French press exploded on me at 6am and I nearly drank glass

Tuesday morning I grabbed my usual 4-cup French press, added the coarse grounds, and poured in the hot water. About 30 seconds later the glass carafe just cracked right down the middle with a loud pop, sending coffee and tiny shards all over my kitchen counter. I stood there in my socks, half asleep, staring at the mess while my cat watched from the doorway like I'd done it on purpose. Turns out the glass was already microfractured from me tapping the spoon on the rim to knock off grounds, which I've done for years without issue. Has anyone else had a press fail on them, and do you actually use a wooden spoon or just accept the risk every morning?

My 8-cup did the exact same thing last winter, except it shattered while I was washing it and I found glass in my sink for weeks. Honestly you're lucky it just cracked instead of exploding everywhere, that tap on the rim trick is a silent killer.
