My brother told me to stop buying pre-ground coffee for my French press

He said it was a waste of money and I was missing the whole point. I argued that my cheap blade grinder was fine and saved me time in the morning. After six months of his nagging, I finally spent $35 on a basic burr grinder. The difference was not small. The first cup I made with fresh ground beans from that grinder tasted like a completely different drink, way more flavor and no bitter sludge at the bottom. I have to admit he was completely right, and now I feel dumb for fighting it for so long. Has anyone else had a piece of coffee advice they resisted that turned out to be a game changer?

My friend was the same way with her drip machine, always using tap water. I kept telling her our city water is hard and tastes like chlorine, but she said it didn't matter. Finally her machine got all scaled up and broke. The repair guy told her the same thing, so she begrudgingly started using filtered water from the fridge. She called me after her first pot and said it was like she'd bought a whole new coffee maker, the flavor was so much cleaner. She still rolls her eyes about it, but she won't go back. What's the next coffee hill you'd be willing to die on?

My buddy refused to clean his grinder, @karenw90. Said the old oils added flavor. It started tasting like burnt rubber and his espresso shots went sour. Took a full teardown to fix it.

Tell her to try it with bottled spring water next. Watch her head explode when her basic coffee tastes like a fancy cafe drink.
