My barista in Seattle said my usual order was 'a waste of a good bean'

He suggested I try it black first, and the floral notes in that Ethiopian roast were actually incredible. Anyone else had a coffee pro push them out of their comfort zone with a simple tip?

Had a guy at a local roaster do the same thing. I always drowned my coffee in cream. He handed me a tiny cup of a light roast, told me to just smell it first. Tasted like blueberries, not bitter at all. Totally changed how I order now. Started appreciating the coffee itself.

Wait, isn't that a medium roast if it tastes like blueberries? Honestly, light roasts usually taste more like lemons or tea to me. That fruity blueberry flavor is a classic sign of a good medium roast. Tbh it's a common mix-up because the beans look lighter. But hey, whatever gets people to enjoy black coffee is a win.

Oh man, that's the coffee shop equivalent of an intervention. They saw you drowning the good stuff and staged a tiny cup rescue. Now you're out here tasting fruit notes instead of just bitter bean water.
