Just found out my go-to coffee beans were roasted 8 months ago
Was at a local roastery in Portland last weekend picking up a bag and the guy behind the counter mentioned most grocery store beans sit on shelves for months. Checked the roast date on my usual bag from the store and it was from last February. Poured a fresh bag from that roastery and the taste difference was night and day. Has anyone else just started checking roast dates?

A February roast date would actually be around 9 months old by now, not 8.

Yep, you're right @the_rowan... my buddy Rob bought a bag from a local place back in February and it was already pretty faded by June. He kept forgetting to use it and by the time he finally opened it two weeks ago the beans were just flat, no life left in them at all. Made a pour over and it tasted like dirty water with a hint of cardboard. So yeah, 9 months is way too long for most beans unless they're stored in some fancy nitrogen flushed bag or something. Rob's not the type to check roast dates either, he just grabs whatever looks good on the shelf.

Gotta disagree a bit here. I've had beans that were roasted 8-10 months ago that still tasted fine, even good, if they were stored right in a cool dark spot. Sounds like Rob just left em in a warm cupboard or something, and that's more about bad storage than the roast date.
