Guy at Java Jack's in Portland said my grind was 'mud', and I finally weighed my beans
Last Saturday the barista at Java Jack's watched me pull a shot and just said 'that's mud, not espresso' and pointed at my grind. I was eyeballing 2 scoops for a double basket, so I grabbed a $12 scale and started weighing 18 grams in and 36 out. First try tasted like actual coffee instead of burnt rubber, and I've been doing it every morning since. Anyone else get humbled by a random barista comment that turned out to be right?
Getting roasted by a barista for your grind is a new level of humbling. Two scoops is such a classic move too, like we all just trusted the scoop with our lives for years. Twelve bucks for a scale that fixes your whole morning routine is honestly the best deal in coffee. That guy probably went home feeling like a hero, and he earned it.
