A barista in Asheville poured my espresso over ice without asking and it ruined my morning
I was at a cafe in Asheville two Saturdays ago, a place I had been going to for about 8 months. I ordered my usual double shot, sat down, and when it came out it was already poured over ice in a tall glass. Nobody asked me. I drank it because I did not want to be that guy, but it tasted thin and sad. I went home and started reading about why hot espresso over ice goes flat so fast, something about the oils and the cold shock. Now I bring my own small cup when I travel and just ask for the shot straight. Has anyone else had a shop mess with their order without a heads up, and did you say something or just let it go?
That line about the oils and cold shock sent me down a rabbit hole last year too, after I watched a guy at a counter in Raleigh get handed a shot in a paper cup with no warning that it was going over ice. The weird part is that shops do this to save time on iced drinks, so the barista already had the glass ready and just dumped it, which means your 8 month habit probably died over a speed thing, not a taste thing. You can just say "hot, in a small cup" when you order and most of them will nod and do it without a fuss.
