Used to fight soot with just a shop vac for 3 years, finally got a HEPA-rated dust collector last month
Man I was straight up huffing clouds of fine black dust like an idiot, now my lungs don't feel like I just smoked a pack of cigarettes after every job. Anyone else take way too long to upgrade their basic cleanup gear?

Bought a cheap harbor freight dust collector at first and honest to god it just blew half the fine stuff back into the air. Upgrading to a real HEPA unit with the cannister filter was like seeing clearly for the first time. My shop vac setup used to clog up after like ten minutes of sanding too, now I can actually work through a whole project without stopping.

@the_kelly Also check the duct size, smaller hose kills airflow fast.
