Tried a new creosote remover spray on a stubborn flue in Boise and it actually made the mess worse

My buddy had the same thing happen, it looked like a tar pit for a day. He let it dry out completely like susanh46 said, then brushed it hard and it came off in sheets. Sometimes the mess is part of the process.

We used that same brand on our cabin chimney last fall and it worked fine. I mean, maybe it depends on the type of creosote buildup you have. The spray can loosen the thick tar stuff and make it run before it dries out, so it looks worse for a bit. You might need to follow up with a good brushing after it sits. Idk, maybe we just got lucky with our batch.

So you're saying the spray made it look worse before it got better? How long did you let it sit before brushing it out?
