TIL the old sweeper in Portland who told me to stop shoving my brush up the flue got me thinking for 3 weeks
Back in March I was on a job in Portland and this guy named Ray who's been sweeping for 32 years watched me jam my brush up a flue like I was trying to stab something. He grabbed my rod, pulled it back about 8 inches, and said if you push too hard you just polish the creosote instead of scraping it off. I blew him off at first because I've been doing this 6 years and thought I knew my way around a flue. But I tried his way on the next 4 jobs and the soot came off in actual flakes instead of dust, and I felt dumb for arguing. Anyone else had an old timer hand them a tip that sounded wrong until you actually tested it?
