That week in December where every call was for a creosote emergency

I did 17 emergency sweeps in 5 days, all because folks tried to burn wet, unseasoned wood they'd just bought from a roadside stand, and my SootMaster brush got so gummed up I had to soak it in a bucket of degreaser overnight.

Keep a moisture meter in your truck and show people the reading on their wood. Tbh, seeing a 35% moisture content on a fresh split from their pile makes it real for them. I tell them to stack that stuff for next year and find some kiln-dried or old pallet wood to get through the week.

My neighbor swore his wood was ready last fall, but his chimney was smoking like a train. I brought my meter over and we checked a split from the middle of his stack, it read like 28%. He just kept saying "but it's been stacked since spring" while staring at the number. That little digital readout changed his whole tune faster than any argument I could have made. He ended up buying a cord to get by and finally let his own wood sit.
