Switched to steel bristles over plastic on this old Victorian chimney in Portland

Had to choose between a plastic or steel bristle brush for a real sooty job last month. Went with the steel one even though my buddy warned it could scratch the flue tiles. Worked great on the heavy creosote, got the whole thing clean in about 45 minutes. Any of you guys had issues with steel bristles damaging liners?

Steel bristles all the way for the heavy stuff. Had a similar situation last fall on a 1920s flue in Seattle that was caked with tar-like creosote. Plastic brush just slid over it like it was nothing, so I swapped to steel and it chewed through that buildup in maybe half an hour. No scratches on the terra cotta liner I could see, but I went easy on the corners where the glaze is thinner.

Did you check the tiles for cracks after that kind of scrubbing?
