Spent 6 hours on a flue that only needed 20 minutes of work
I pulled up to a house in Tacoma last Tuesday, clogged flue, and I figured a standard rod and brush job would handle it. Turned out the blockage was a dried squirrel nest plus a stuck damper hinge that I didn't spot until I'd already run the brush through twice. So, did I waste my time overcomplicating it, or is it normal to burn half a day on a simple call when the house is old and janky like this one?

Tacoma oldies are always hiding surprises. Half my calls there end up being a wild goose chase like that. Honestly, 20 minutes is what you quote, six hours is what you eat. That stuck damper hinge is the kind of thing that bites you after you've already got everything dirty. You didn't overcomplicate it, you just found the real issue late. Normal day in tech work, honestly.
