Shoutout to the old timer who told me to stop using wire brushes on clay flues - saved my client's liner

A guy named Pete at the hardware store in Lincoln told me 6 months ago that wire brushes scratch up clay flue tiles and cause cracks over time. I didn't believe him because I had been using them for 10 years. Last month I checked a house I cleaned 2 years back with a wire brush and saw hairline cracks all down the liner. Switched to poly brushes and now I'm wondering how many other liners I messed up. Anyone else stick with wire brushes or switch?

Did you check the actual condition of those clay flues BEFORE you switched to poly brushes? Wire brushes might be the nail in the coffin, but a lot of old liners already have tiny manufacturing cracks or settling damage that gets blamed on the brush later. Either way, better safe than sorry - I'd guess half of us are just cleaning up problems we didn't cause in the first place.

Sounds like one guy's opinion got in your head a little too much.
