Saw a roofer in Bend tar over a chimney crown last Tuesday
Was on a job nearby and watched him slather asphalt all over the crown instead of doing a real wash and cap. That crap will crack in one winter and the homeowner will call me thinking the flue is plugged. How do you all explain to customers that a quick patch up top is just pushing the problem down the road?

Man, I have to disagree with you on this one. Taring over a crown is a hack job if the crown is already shot, sure, but if it's just a hairline crack and the crown is still solid, a good asphalt coating can buy the homeowner 5 or 6 years easy. Plenty of old-timers did it that way for decades and those roofs held up just fine. The real problem is when guys slap it on a crown that's already crumbling or spalling, then yeah, you're just hiding a mess that's gonna bite someone later. So it ain't the tar itself that bugs me, it's whether the guy looked at what was under it first.
