My uncle said to always check the damper with a mirror before starting a job.
He was a sweep for 40 years in Buffalo. I ignored it once on a quick clean in January. Got a face full of old ash because the homeowner had it closed. Ruined my morning. Anyone have a favorite mirror brand or a different trick?

Oh man, your uncle was 100% right. I learned that lesson the hard way too, not with ash but with a surprise family of birds that had a nest in there. The mirror trick is a lifesaver. I just use a cheap little telescoping inspection mirror from the hardware store, the kind with the little bendy arm. It's beat up but it gets the job done. Never doing a quick check without it again after that mess.

Wait, birds? Like actual live birds just chilling in your chimney? That's way worse than ash, I would have lost my mind. How do you even start cleaning that up without causing a whole scene?
