I stopped using shop vac attachments for hard chimney floors, went back to a broom
Pulled 40 bags of creosote out of a 1920s stack in Portland last month and the shop vac just smeared the fine dust into the mortar gaps. Switched to an old stiff push broom and a dustpan after that job, takes me 10 extra minutes but the floor comes out actually clean. Has anyone else done the same or do you all still swear by the vac?

The part about the shop vac smearing fine dust into the mortar gaps is half right, but it's not the vac itself doing that. A regular shop vac filter actually lets the really fine creosote dust pass right through and it settles back down on everything, which is why it looks like it got smeared in. You need a HEPA filter on the vac or you're just blowing the stuff around the room. That said, a stiff broom does get into the uneven spots on old brick way better than any attachment will.
