Hot take: I have been using the wrong brush head for 2 years straight
I cleaned a flue last week at a house in Oak Park and the homeowner pointed out I was leaving more soot than usual. Turns out I had been using a steel brush on clay flue tiles this whole time when I should have been using poly. How did I not connect the dots sooner with all the scratches I was making?

Wrong brush head for 2 years straight" - sounds like me and my entire approach to life honestly. I spent a year using a wire brush on my stainless steel chimney cap thinking I was cleaning it, but really I was just giving it a nice scratched up finish. The scratches were a dead giveaway but I just thought stainless steel was naturally that ugly looking.
Did you at least keep the scratches as a memory of your hard work or are you like me and have to look at them every time you walk past the fireplace?
