Holding on to soot brushes way too long - am I the only one?

I was talking to old Joe at the supply shop last Tuesday and he told me I should toss my brush after 20 jobs instead of running it till the bristles are bald. He said it leaves more buildup behind and now I'm wondering if my regulars have been getting dirtier chimney sweeps than they should. Has anyone else gotten crap for keeping gear past its prime?

Bought a used brush off Craigslist once that looked fine but had this weird smell I couldn't place. Used it for about three months before a customer said his living room smelled like old wet socks after I left. Turned out the previous owner had been using it for creosote log stuff and the bristles were basically soaked in that cheap chemical residue. Had to replace all my brushes that week and give that guy a free touchup.

That Craigslist brush story is rough, man. 20 jobs with a mystery smell brush is basically playing roulette with your reputation and your customers' trust. I feel for you having to eat that free touchup, but honestly it was probably the only way to keep that guy from posting a bad review.
