Had to redo a half dozen flues before I figured out my brush angle was off

Spent five years sweeping chimneys before I realized I was angling my brush wrong on every single job. Last month I was on a job at Mrs. Henderson's place, old Victorian with a tricky offset. My apprentice asked why I was fighting the brush so hard and showed me how he held it straight instead of tilted. Next two flues I tried his way and it took half the time. Anyone else have a simple habit they picked up late that made a big difference?

Honestly, I read a blog post by a old timer mason who said most people angle their brush wrong because they're copying someone who learned wrong. He said the brush should follow the flue's natural path, not fight it. Switch made a huge difference for me too once I stopped forcing it.

Took me three years to stop using a stiff wrist and let the rod do the work instead.
