Appreciation post: That one time a squirrel nest nearly burned down a house in Greenville
Got a frantic call last Tuesday about smoke backing into a living room, and when I got my camera up there, it was packed solid with nesting material just inches from the flue liner. We pulled out two full garbage bags of dry leaves and twigs before the home owner lit their next fire. How often do you guys find active animal blockages that bad?

Man, that is a serious close call. Two whole bags is a crazy amount of material to pull out of a chimney. It really shows how fast those nests can build up into a real danger. Good thing they called before lighting a fire, that could have gone so wrong. Makes you want to tell everyone to get their chimneys checked.

Wow, two bags is insane. But honestly, it doesn't even build up that fast sometimes. A determined critter can stuff a chimney full in just a couple days if they're really going for it. That's why a yearly check isn't even enough if you hear scratching. You gotta get it looked at right away.
