A 30 year sweep in Portland showed me I was brushing the smoke shelf all wrong
So I was at the regional sweep meetup in Portland back in March and a guy named Dale who has been sweeping for 30 years asked to see my brush setup. He said the way I was angling my 12 inch poly brush was scraping the smoke shelf instead of lifting the soot off it, and he showed me to tilt it down about 20 degrees and pull instead of push. I tried it on a nasty 1960s ranch house two days later and got maybe a third more creosote out of the shelf area with way less effort. I have been sweeping for 6 years and never had anyone correct me on that one move. Now I am wondering what else I picked up wrong early on, so what is one technique someone showed you in person that no video or manual ever taught you?
Man, the smoke shelf is exactly where I've been losing time too. Did Dale say anything about whether that same tilt works on a angled shelf vs a flat one?
