Swapped my cheap plastic blinds for bamboo ones from a craft store

I paid $8 for a roll of bamboo fencing at Michael's and cut it to fit my kitchen window... looked way nicer than the old yellowed plastic blinds. My neighbor actually asked if I hired someone to do it. Anyone else tried using non-traditional materials for window coverings?

Honestly those bamboo blinds from Michael's are probably gonna warp and crack in like 6 months. Plastic blinds might be ugly but they last forever and you can just wipe them down with soap. Bamboo's a pain to clean and if your window gets any direct sunlight it'll fade to a weird yellowish brown real fast. Plus the cheap ones have staples that stick out and snag on everything. My parents tried that exact DIY thing and they ended up replacing them within a year because the strings broke. You basically just made something that looks okay for now but will need replacing way sooner than the $20 set from Home Depot would have.

Yeah I actually tried that bamboo blind thing from Michaels a few summers ago. The strings gave out on mine too after about 8 months, right where they go through the loops at the top. I ended up just taking them down and getting the basic white plastic ones from Walmart for like 15 bucks. Those things are still hanging in my kitchen like 4 years later and I just wipe them down with a damp rag whenever they get greasy. I mean the bamboo looks nicer for sure, if you only care about the first few months.
