Painted my own kitchen cabinets for $60 and they actually look decent

My wife wanted new cabinets but the quote came back at $4800. I said no way. Watched a few videos and spent a Saturday sanding and painting them myself. Used a $8 can of Zinsser primer and a $25 gallon of Behr paint from Home Depot. They're not perfect up close but from 3 feet away they look better than the old 90s oak. Anyone else tried painting cabinets and had good or bad results?

That $4800 quote is brutal, I would've done the same thing honestly. I tried a similar DIY on a small cabinet in my laundry room and it chipped within a month so I feel your pain on the durability question. Even if it only lasts a couple years, you saved a ton of money and can always try again with better paint later.

$60 might get you decent paint but a gallon of Behr is never going to hold up to the grease and grime a kitchen sees. I redid mine a couple years ago with cabinet-specific paint and it was closer to $150 after brushes and supplies. For what it's worth, that Zinsser primer is solid stuff though, so maybe you'll get lucky for a while.
