My neighbor told me to just paint over my old kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them
My neighbor Bill said he did his whole kitchen with a $30 can of paint from Lowe's and it looked brand new. I figured what the heck and tried it on my cabinets in Phoenix last summer. After about 6 months the paint started chipping off around the handles and edges where my hands touch them most. I didn't sand or prime them right before painting so that was probably the mistake. Has anyone else tried painting cabinets and had it actually hold up long term?

Diana your neighbor's story sounds like a total nightmare. I'm sitting here cringing just thinking about paint peeling off in sheets like that. It's such a bummer when you try to save some money and it just ends up looking worse than what you started with. I had a friend who did the same thing with her bathroom vanity and it was peeling within 3 months, she was so embarrassed when people came over. You really do have to sand and prime the heck out of those surfaces or it's just a sad waste of time and money.

My neighbor did the same thing with a $20 can of Rust-Oleum and his cabinets look worse now than before he started, with paint peeling in sheets around the knobs. Idk, maybe it's just me but sanding and priming sounds like way more work than just buying new doors from a home store. Honestly, unless you're willing to redo it every year I'm not sure painting is worth the hassle for something you touch constantly.
