My neighbor told me my front door looked 'sad' and it changed how I paint
A few months ago my neighbor across the street mentioned my front door looked a little tired. I always just slapped on any old paint without priming first so it peeled fast. She suggested I spend 12 bucks on a small can of exterior primer and do two thin coats instead of one thick one. The door has held up through two rainstorms now and actually looks rich instead of flat.

12 bucks on primer and now you're the neighborhood paint expert. I get that it looks better but let's not pretend that's some kind of life changing revelation. You just did basic prep work that anyone with half a brain would do in the first place. I've seen doors that survived ten years with no primer because the paint was decent and the weather was mild. Two rainstorms is not exactly the test of time either. Come back in a year and tell me if it still looks rich.

Primer's not just for adhesion, it also blocks the tannins in wood from bleeding through the paint. You probably won't see that effect for a few months though.
