I always hung curtains too low until I saw a photo my friend took of my living room

She posted it online and someone asked why my windows looked short. Turns out hanging them closer to the ceiling makes the room feel way bigger. Anyone else make that mistake for years before figuring it out?

I hung my curtains high for years and finally lowered them last spring. My living room has these tall ceilings and the high curtains made the windows look like they were floating in space. I actually measured after a friend pointed out the same thing you mentioned, and found that curtains grazing the top of the window frame makes the room feel cozier to me. Everyone talks about making rooms look bigger, but sometimes smaller feels more comfortable. It really depends on your room.

You mentioned "sometimes smaller feels more comfortable" and that really hit home for me. People get so caught up in making everything look bigger that they forget cozy is just as good, maybe better, depending on the room. I think a lot of that curtain advice online is for standard 8-foot ceilings, not for the tall ones you've got. Matching the curtain height to the window frame just makes sense when the ceiling is way up there, otherwise it does look off like you said. It's nice hearing someone else figured out that going against the trend worked better for their space.
