Went from killing every succulent to keeping 8 alive for 2 years straight

I used to be the person who bought a cute little echeveria from the grocery store and watched it turn to mush in 3 weeks. Watered it every Tuesday because that's what the tag said. Moved to Portland in 2021 and my neighbor saw my sad collection on the porch and basically laughed at me. She told me to stop watering on a schedule and instead stick my finger in the soil, wait until it's bone dry, then drown it. Also said to ignore the tag and give them way more sun than I thought. I switched methods in April 2022 and now I've got 8 healthy ones, including a jade that started blooming last month. My question is, how many of you actually follow the watering schedule on those little plastic stakes, or did you also have to learn the hard way that they're lying?

Those little stakes are straight up liars lol. I killed like 5 plants before I realized the tag is just there to make you feel bad about yourself. Now I just poke my finger in the dirt like a weirdo and hope for the best.
