Wasted $50 on a fancy potting mix that killed my succulents

I bought this expensive bag of 'cactus and succulent' soil from a garden center in Austin last month, and it held way too much moisture. Within two weeks, three of my echeverias had root rot and basically turned to mush. Has anyone else had a bad experience with pre-made succulent mixes?

Did you maybe keep the mix too wet from the start though? I've used those same bags and my succulents did fine, just had to let them dry out totally between waterings. Sometimes it's more about how you water than the soil itself.

Honestly, I had the same problem until I switched to mixing in extra perlite right from the bag. @sanchez.mia is right, watering habits matter a ton, but adding more drainage gave me way more room for error. Tbh, that one change saved a bunch of my plants even when I got a little heavy handed with the water.
