Update: got dragged to a cactus show in Tucson and now half my windowsill is succulents
I tagged along with my neighbor to the Tucson cactus and succulent show back in March just to get out of the house, and a guy named Hank sold me a 4 inch pot of tiny round cacti for $6. Three months later I have 11 pots lined up on the sill and I check their soil every morning like a weirdo, which I never did with my old ferns. Anyone else get sucked into succulents this way, or is it just a Tucson thing?
Did the same thing start with a $5 pot from the grocery store clearance rack? I kept killing ferns because I watered them on a schedule no matter what, but succulents made me actually stick a finger in the dirt first. What worked for me was mixing extra perlite into regular potting soil, like half and half, since the stuff straight from the bag held way too much water and rotted two of mine. After that switch I stopped losing them and the collection just kept growing from there.
