That time I tried to rehydrate a dried fern and made a mess

I bought a dried fern at a farmers market in Asheville last fall because it looked cool on the shelf. After a few weeks it started shedding like crazy, so I figured I'd mist it and bring it back to life. Big mistake. It turned into this slimy brown pile within two days and stunk up my whole kitchen. Turns out dried ferns are already dead, not dormant, and rehydrating them just speeds up rot. I checked with a guy at the local nursery and he laughed, then showed me how to tell the difference by bending a stem. If it snaps, it's dead. If it bends, it's just thirsty. Has anyone else made this mistake with preserved plants or am I the only one?

NOPE, hold on, you're totally wrong about this. Plenty of dried plants, especially ferns, can come back with the right soak and some patience, so blaming the plant for your soggy mess is a cop out. If you'd let that thing dry out slowly over a week instead of drowning it in one go, you might have actually gotten some green back. Sounds like you just rushed it and made soup, that's on you, not the fern.
